P U N C T U R E D S K Y, 2012 Sculpture by the Sea, Cottesloe, Perth, Australia
Material: Shaped plywood, drawings
Size: Length 5m x Width 2,7m x Height 2,7m
The work Punctured Sky deals with the ecological problem of the depletion of the ozone layer. This serious environmental issue has been actual for years especially in Australia and, somewhat surprisingly, also in Finland. With this work we wanted to raise awareness about climate change as well as the risks of overexposure to the sun in one of the hottest countries in the world. When entering the space it is impossible to avoid the strong rays of light. The sun shoots beautiful shining light spots onto the visitors and the walls of the space – but these violent ultra violet rays are as dangerous as they are beautiful. The almost inseparable connection of good and harmful is as difficult to comprehend in the space as it is in our daily lives. The holes that are drilled into the ceiling make a pattern that is made to match the chemical structure of the depletion of the ozone layer.
