The Strive is a work created specifically for the island of Ameland's environmentally exposed location and unique nature. The work symbolizes the Netherlands centuries-long, and never-ending, struggle against the elements. With climate change new challenges will arise in the near future.
Inspired by the marks made in the sand by constant movement of grass blowing in the strong winds - the winds now move the 'hand' of the work to make drawings onto the dune. These drawings, however, are quickly erased by the next layer of sand moving in with the wind. The work is in a continuous strive to make its mark on the everchanging surface of the sand, much like the efforts of us humans to make our mark in the world in whatever way we can. This seemingly hopeless action can also be perceived as something optimistic - no matter what, nature will always prevail.
