U T I L E I N U T I L I A (The Useful Useless), 2021 - (ongoing process)
in collaboration with Robin Reuter
Location: Barefoot Path, Österretais, Korpo
Utile Inutilia (The Useful Useless) aims to shed light on the importance of heritage plants both historically and in a contemporary aspect.
Once important local plants have been forgotten and are nowadays merely considered as useless or, at most, decorative weeds. As a symbol of the human need to control its environment – systematic rows of heritage species are sown in the middle of a meadow previously used as farmland. The plants selected are all edible and can be found growing wild in our yards and other unfarmed areas.
The objective of the project is to make people more aware of the usefulness of the familiar plants that already surround them. Native species are also important for our biodiversity and provide important nutrition for many local bees and insects.
The work is an ongoing process.
Local restaurant Backpocket, just 300m from the site, will later develop dishes using the plants.
