ZOSTERA MARINA / BREATHE, 2018. VIDEO, SOUND
ZOSTERA MARINA / ARTIFICIAL MEADOW, 2018. ARTIFICIAL SEAGRASS MEDOW, FANS
Zostera Marina is a project that started in 2016 and which aims to increase environmental awareness through science and art cooperation. The partners in the project are Sandra Nyberg and Heini Nieminen (Elin&Keino), Christoffer Boström, Docent of Marine Biology at Åbo Akademi University, and the Korpoström Archipelago Centre. Science is the starting point for Elin&Keino’s artistic process. We strive to bring the latest scientific results to public discussion through art, to bring visibility to the Eelgrass meadows’ (Zostera marina) role in the Baltic Sea, and highlight threats to the eelgrass and marine ecosystems.
The process has (literally) taken us into unknown waters along with the scientists. We have gotten acquainted with the work of marine biologists by discussing, reading, documenting and participating in expeditions and utilizing scientific techniques as art tools. In the end, our aim is to use art as a medium to show the importance of eelgrass to our environment and us humans.
The works of the Zostera Marina project are based on our glimpses into the underwater world and information provided by marine biologists about these important factors in our environment. The impressive, beautiful and unexpected view of the meadows on the sea bottom led us to think about how invisible and unknown this important ecosystem to is to humans. The importance of eelgrass as a producer of oxygen and its carbon sink qualities - "the lungs of the sea" led us to the question the future and our heritage for future generations. Will we still breathe the oxygen produced by the sea, or will we suffocate it with our actions over time.
